Abstract:

Background: Everyone is exposed to radon because it is present everywhere with varying concentrations. Radon and its progeny are well established as lung carcinogenic. Materials and Methods: Track etch technique using LR-115 plastic track detectors has been used to measure the effective radium content and radon exhalation rates in soil samples collected from urban area of Etah district of Uttar Pradesh province in Northern India. Results: The values of effective radium content are found to vary from 27.87 to 45.14 Bq.kg-1 with a mean value of 34.98 Bq.kg-1. The mass exhalation rates of radon vary from 2.38 × 10-6 to 3.86 × 10-6 Bq.kg-1.d-1 with a mean value of 2.99 × 10-6 Bq.kg-1.d-1. The surface exhalation rates of radon have been found to vary from 6.19 × 10-5 to 10.03 × 10-5 Bq.m-2.d-1 with a mean value of 7.77 × 10-5 Bq.m-2.d-1. Conclusion: Radon exhalation study is important for understanding the relative contribution of the material to the total radon concentration found inside the dwellings. The values of radium and radon exhalation rates are found to be below the safe limit recommended by OECD, 1979. Iran. J. Radiat. Res., 2011 8(4): 207-210

The Influence of Meteorological and Soil Parameters on Radon Exhalation

To clarify the mechanism of radon transport from soil to surface, long term continuous measurements of radon exhalation were conducted at one site in combination with measurements of radon concentration in soil gas, soil temperature, pressure difference, soil moisture and meteorological parameters. Based on the results of measurements over a two year period, the influence of meteorological and ...

Estimation of Radon Exhalation Rate and Radium Content in Soil Samples of Pathankot District, Punjab Using LR-115 Plastic Detector

In the present investigation, soil samples were collected from 10 villages belonging to Pathankot district, Punjab, India and assessed for radium content using LR-115 plastic detector. The ‘track etch’ technique has been employed for measuring the radium content. From the radium content, radon exhalation rates and mass exhalation rates were calculated for these samples. The mass exhalation rate...

The effective radium content and radon exhalation rate in hair dyes samples

Background: Hair dyes are the important materials widely used by various peoples in Iraq and other countries. The present work investigates the presence of the effective radium content and radon exhalation rate in hair dyes samples. Materials and Methods: Twenty  hair dyes  samples were collected from Iraqi markets. Sealed can technique using LR-115 type II plastic track detector s ha...

Measurement of radium concentration and radon exhalation rates of soil samples collected from some areas of Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, India using plastic track detectors

Background: Radon is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas and it is the first cause of lung cancer among non- smokers. The assessment of the level of radium in building materials helps in understanding the radiological implications. It has been observed that everyone has some levels of exposure to them. Therefore measurement of radium and radon in the soil samples are important f...

Radon Exhalation Rates and Radium Estimation Studies in Soil Samples Collected from Various Locations in the Environment of Shahjahanpur District of Uttar Pradesh, India

The measurements of radium content and radon exhalation rates in terms of mass and area in soil samples collected from various locations in the shahjahanpur District were carried by using cylindrical can technique(CCT) based on LR-115 type II plastic track detector. From the result it was found that the effective radium content in the study area varies from 0.485Bq/kg to 2.503Bq/kg with an aver...
